Why Clitoraid
Why Clitoraid Exists?
Clitoraid is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to combating Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) and supporting women affected by this practice through education, medical care, and advocacy.
Founded in 2006, Clitoraid exists to restore sexual health, bodily autonomy, and dignity to survivors of FGM/C, while working to challenge the cultural taboos and misinformation that allow the practice to persist.
Origins & Foundation
Clitoraid was founded in 2006 by Rael, spiritual leader of the International Raelian Movement, as a humanitarian response to the widespread and lasting harm caused by Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting.
The organization was created with a clear and specific purpose:
To offer clitoral restorative surgery as a medical option for women who have survived FGM/C—particularly in regions where access to specialized care is limited.
From its inception, Clitoraid has approached FGM/C as both a public health issue and a violation of women’s human rights.
Mission & Approach
Medical intervention, by supporting access to clitoral restorative surgery
Education and awareness, by promoting accurate information about female anatomy and sexual health
Clitoraid believes that healing must address both the body and the social stigma surrounding female sexuality.
Sexual pleasure
Bodily autonomy
Physical wellbeing
Personal dignity
Since 2009, Clitoraid’s volunteer surgeons have performed over 600 clitoral restorative procedures, primarily in Africa and the United States.
According to patient follow-ups:
Approximately 60% of patients reported the ability to experience orgasm after surgery
Many also reported reductions in pain and improvements in emotional wellbeing
These surgeries are performed by trained medical professionals and offered as a voluntary, informed choice, never as an obligation.
